Hi there, Christopher! Thanks so much for sailing by planDisney with your question. I’m glad you asked, because travel insurance is one of those things that may not feel exciting to talk about, but it can bring a lot of peace of mind.
When my dad was sick last year, we were worried we might have to cancel our Disney Cruise on the Magic. My travel agent recommended the
Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plan, and even though we thankfully didn’t end up needing it, I can’t tell you how reassuring it was to know we had it in place.
The Vacation Protection Plan includes coverage for things like trip cancellations or interruptions due to illness, injury, or other covered reasons, as well as delays that stretch beyond six hours. It also provides reimbursement if your baggage is lost, damaged, or delayed, and most importantly, it offers medical coverage if you become sick or injured during your trip. If a serious emergency ever required you to be transported off the ship, the plan includes coverage for medical evacuation, which can be an enormous expense without insurance.
Another feature Guests often appreciate is the “Cancel For Any Reason” benefit. If something comes up that isn’t covered by the insurance portion of the plan, you may receive a future cruise credit equal to 75% of your cancellation fees. Those credits can be applied toward another Disney Cruise Line vacation within a year of issue, though they aren’t transferable and don’t have cash value.
The cost of the plan is 8% of your voyage fare, excluding taxes. It can be added at the time of booking or any time up until your final payment date, unless you’ve booked a Concierge stateroom (those require the protection plan to be purchased when you put down the deposit). Once it’s added, you’ll see it listed under “Next Steps” in your
Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and you'll also receive an email confirmation.
After final payment, though, it can no longer be added. However, I do want to point out that the plan only covers air travel if your flights are booked through Disney Cruise Line, and any pre- or post-cruise travel arrangements made on your own aren’t included. If you want to purchase it, the easiest way is to
call Disney Cruise Line directly or ask your travel planner to add it and they can walk you through the details.
I hope this helps you feel more confident as you prepare for your upcoming voyage, Christopher! Please visit us here at planDisney anytime you’d like help with your planning.
Sea ya real soon,
Eean
